Technician Post at Imperial College School of Science, Technology & Medicine.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Technician

Division: Division of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine

Grade: Wellcome Trust, University Technician Grade D (available up to 5 years)

Responsible to: Dr CM Lloyd

Location: Sir Alexander Fleming Building, IC

Summary of Post: The post supports a research programme investigating the cellular and molecular pathways underlying development and resolution of airway remodelling. The work will involve generation of transgenic constructs to develop models of airway inflammation in mice. The work will involve a variety of in vivo and in vitro techniques to evaluate the cells and molecules involved in the development of airway remodelling, as well as in vivo measurement of airway function. The post-holder will also be expected to undertake general laboratory duties.

Duties and responsibilities: The post-holder will be responsible for assistance and execution of experiments as described in the grant funding this post. In addition the post holder may be asked to assist with other projects within the group, where appropriate. These are summarised in the following abstract (though may vary as the project develops):

"We are examining the role of inflammatory cells in eliciting the progression of airway remodelling in mouse models of progressive lung disease. The interactions of effector T cells and their mediators with resident lung cells and other infiltrating leukocytes is being examined using active challenge models as well as adoptive transfer systems. Functional roles of key molecules are determined by blocking experiments, with antibodies and small molecule antagonists. The effects of these manipulations on development of airway hyperreactivity, inflammation, and parameters of airway remodelling such as collagen deposition and mucus production are then assessed. We aim to investigate the role of fibroblasts and epithelial cells in the development of airway remodelling by developing novel lines of transgenic mice."

The appointee will be expected to display a high level of motivation and the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently. Duties and techniques to be applied include: responsibility for immunisations, measurement of lung function, sampling of the airways, tissue preparation, cytokine assays, histological analysis, immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridisation, RNA and DNA preparation, flow cytometry, generation of transgenic constructs. Experience of some or all of these techniques would be advantageous but training is also available.

The post-holder will meet regularly (at least weekly) with Dr Lloyd to discuss experimental design and data and plan work in advance.

The post-holder will work with other researchers and technical staff in the laboratory to optimise techniques in quantitative PCR, cell culture and flow cytometry.

The post holder will help with ordering and inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents, and in the safe and efficient running of the laboratory. The post-holder will be expected to attend courses and practice good laboratory practice, with particular regard to radiation and biohazard safety.

Job descriptions cannot be exhaustive and so the postholder may be required to undertake other duties which are broadly in line with the above key responsibilities.

Post-Doctoral Position at the Laboratory of Pathophysiology and Pharmacology of Joint diseases at Nancy, France.

The Laboratory of Pathophysiology and Pharmacology of joint diseases in Nancy (France) expects a one year position at post-doctoral level for non european researchers (except from Switzerland, Norway, Rumania, Poland, Hungary). The goal of the lab is to study joint diseases and more specifically the mechanisms underlying cartilage destruction during rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. Recently, we hypothesized that adipose-derived proteins such as adipocytokines may be involved in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis and so may be the metabolic link between obesity and osteoarthritis.

Research will focus on the contribution of adipocytokines in this joint disease in both human and experimental models. The project will include molecular, biochemical and histological approaches to evaluate cell response (characterization of gene and protein targets) and cartilage changes (chondrocyte metabolism, extracellular matrix analysis).

We are seeking an independant individual who can operate on animal (rat). Experiences in molecular biology, cell culture and immunohistochemistry are desirable. Candidates interested in this expected position should apply as soon as possible (the closing date is September 10th, 2004).

To apply, please send a full CV with contact details of three referees to:
