VASCULAR DEVELOPMENT

The Novartis Foundation, The Royal Society of Medicine & Physiological Society

The Clore Management Centre, Birkbeck College,
Malet Street, London WC1, on Friday 16 June 2006.

The programme for this meeting has been organized around four main topics: the cell biology of blood vessel formation, the genetics of blood vessel formation, embryonic blood vessel formation in different animal systems, and the mutual signalling between blood vessels and tissue cells. With the participation of vascular biologists, cell biologists and developmental biologists, it is hoped that the meeting will reveal much new and exciting work in this area, help to identify and stimulate promising new research directions and encourage continuing and new collaborations between investigators.

Developing Technologies In Human Cytokine Detection

Birkbeck College, London

Detection of human cytokines is often at the heart of human disease studies, but the multitude of techniques involved, and their complexity can make finding the right technique difficult. This meeting will give an insight into the latest advances in both established techniques, such as ELISPOT and FACS and the more recently developed mulitplex technology for both genes and proteins, such as the Luminex system. Talks will be given by both the companies developing these techniques and the academics using them.

XIV International Symposium on Atherosclerosis

Rome, Italy

The triennial series of International Symposia on Atherosclerosis (ISA), held under the auspices of the International Atherosclerosis Society (IAS), offers the world’s largest and most prestigious forum for the presentation of new research and clinical findings on arterial disease.
These meetings, attended by thousands of specialists interested in atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular diseases provide the ideal setting for presentation of the most relevant and important findings in experimental research and in the clinic. The most recent symposia have been held in Paris (1997), Stockholm (2000) and Kyoto (2003). Rome will be the site of the Symposium in 2006.

The Scientific Program Committee of the Symposium to be held in 2006, with advice from the IAS Executive Board and from the International Advisory Board, will develop a high-quality program. This program will reflect the growth of this field, both in traditional areas and in new areas of both basic and clinical science where the most exciting discoveries are foreseen.

We all have one dream: to provide the International Atherosclerosis Society and the international scientific community with an exciting, innovative, and scientifically oriented Symposium in an environment that will foster old friendships and new collaborations with as many people from new and emerging countries as possible: good health and proper health care are the rights of all individuals.
We all look forward to welcoming you to Rome!

Non-Mammalian Models for Systems Biology

Birkbeck College, London

Model organisms have a long history of underpinning research into basic biological processes from the fundamental mechanisms of genetics to the detailed molecular understanding of developmental processes. In the post genome era several of the well established models are now serving as templates for systems level research. Compact genomes and well-established genomics resources, coupled with excellent genetics, facilitate the development of experimental and computational methods that are more widely applicable to, for example, the development of systems approaches in mammals. The meeting aims to demonstrate how whole-genome and systems level approaches are progressing with key model systems covering the major non-mammalian species.
