Vegetables as Inflammation Remedies

Vegetables are healthy as is but there are some that have anti-inflammatory properties as well.

Broccoli Broccoli. Popular vegetable among Italians was cultivated as far as two thousand years ago. It can be eaten cooked and raw as well. High in Vitamin C and believed to have anti-cancer properties it is valuable food and should be on each family’s plate regularly. Steaming Broccoli is recommended over boiling since boiling reduces most of the sought after properties. Along anti-inflammatory properties Broccoli when eaten on a regular basis has shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer and heart disease.
Garlic Garlic. This ancient vegetable was well known to our ancestors and is still one of the most popular of all today. It was used both as food and medicine for centuries. Garlic is even mentioned in the Bible. Along with anti-inflammatory it also has antibacterial, antiviral and also anti fungal properties. Similar to Broccoli it is also believed that Garlic can help prevent cancer and heart disease. Today it is mostly used in salad dressing and various sauces. Many people do not like it because of the smell but considering all the properties Garlic has it should be on the menu regularly.
Spinach Spinach. This Asian vegetable spread all over the world over the century. We all know Popeye cartoon and comic strip and Spinach power. Fresh and steamed it is high in nutritional value. Full of Vitamin A, iron, calcium, Vitamin C and omega-3 fatty acids it is considered super food.
Olive Oil Olives and Olive Oil. Tasty green fruit growing on small trees on the Mediterranean coastline is a nutritional jewel. It can be eaten either as a raw fruit or as oil. Technically olives are fruits but considering how we use them in culinary we classify them as vegetables. Olive oil contains a wide variety of antioxidants rarely found in other oils. It provides healthy balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fats. Recent studies have shown some anti-cancer properties but further research is needed.
Cabbage Cabbage. Full of Vitamin C and glutamine amino acids this vegetable is among the best as far as anti-inflammatory properties are concerned. For centuries in traditional European medicine Cabbage was used to treat inflammation. Throw low calories into the equation and Cabbage can also be used in a wide variety of diet recipes. Studies also show that Indole-3-carbinol chemical in Cabbage block cancer cells growth.
Sweet Potato Sweet Potato Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, complex carbohydrates, beta caroten…you name it. All these compounds can be found in this easily available vegetable. Each cookbook contains numerous recipes revolving around Sweet Potato. It is important source of antioxidants and have proven anti-inflammatory properties.
